Minneapolis restaurant review: Bagu Sushi

It is so rare that we get out. Notice this category, restaurant review, is nearly empty. So we snuck out for a bit since Saturday was our 8 year wedding anniversary. No foolin, Sunny has put up with me thus far.

It is fairly common, when given a chance, to go to a sushi joint. Our most frequent is Sushi Tango in Calhoun Square, which we feel is a pretty safe bet.

This time we wanted something new. Mostly our first choice was Cafe Ena however it appears nearly impossible to get a seat in this joint. I know I am a little old school thinking I can show up without a reservation, but common, this is a little joint in Southwest Minneapolis, you wouldnt think it would be that backed up!

After going through the “where do you want to go’s” and making a reservation at Mannys Steak House, and sorry Manny or whoever you are, for not showing up, we finally decided to take a drive to a newer place.

Which is where Bagu Sushi comes in.

To be honest I had low expectations. I didnt want to brave it. Sunny, the avid adventurer did! Now, the sushi was great. The first round was served lighting fast. The atmosphere of the patio was cool, casual, never mind that the building next door used to be  a gun range, maybe it still is?

The inside of the pace is beautiful. But to be honest, I would be super claustrophobic if I had to sit in there. Thank golly for summer, and that patio, Bagu is only going to be a summer place for me.

To the guy drinking Miller Light at the table next to us, I was embarrassed for you. Your girlfriend had enough taste to drink a Thai beer, one that I had never heard of. I stuck with one of my favorites, Sapporo.

My favorite roll that we tried was a special, and not on the menu. However it appeared to be the same thing as Three Wise Guys, only $3 cheaper.

Overall I like the place. Do the patio though. And Im really concerned about the note in the bathroom. Something like “we have sensitive plumbing, please do not flush any solids, including toilet paper”. I will give you $10 to look under that trash can lid, yikes!

  1. Hmm, well I enjoy the sushi joints with conveyor belts, so you can choose smaller portions for smaller prices, more selection and more bang for your buck.
If you have ever tried any.

  2. I tend to like fresh sushi. That stuff floating around a circle or conveyor belt is usually dried out. Also, I think there is more variety on a menu right?

Fresh made to order sushi is the way to go if you are going to do it.

And do it Japan style, no chopsticks, just fingers.
